Help me understand boat speeds and how it relates to engine power. I have an Old Town Discovery Sport 15 that I push with a Mercury 3.5 hp, 4-stroke. Using my smart phone it seems to top out at 8 mph but that's not even full-throttle.
The sticker says the boat can handle up to 5 h.p. I am guessing that since going from 3/4-throttle up to full open with the 3.5 h.p. doesn't net me any more speed I am probably at hull speed. So going up to 5 h.p. would not help. Or would 5h.p. get me...
Any benefit to more horsepower outboard?
